Marine miles - walking the country in support of HWDT

Indy, 18, from Sherwood Forest Nottinghamshire and Katie, 20 from Edinburgh are embarking off for 107 days to walk from lands end to John o' Groats. In classic over-the-top fashion, we won’t just be walking the normal end-to-end route, but instead will be taking a bit of a detour and will be walking the entire Hebrides.

The reason: to support Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. We want to raise as much money as we can for this amazing organisation - supporting the conservation of whales and dolphins throughout the west coast of Scotland, an area we both know and love.

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) have been
running for three decades protecting the marine mammals and
sea birds of the Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. Their
superb community education systems engage over 20,000 people every year about the plight of our marine mammals. They regularly give talks in schools about this topic including entanglement in fishing equipment for example.

The west coast of Scotland is of international importance
for whales, dolphins and porpoises, with many areas of
critical habitat in need of protection and recovery. The
pressures faced by whales and dolphins globally are huge
and the threat of extinction for some species is real. Even
in Scottish waters a much-loved community of killer
whales face extinction within our lifetime. The Hebrides is
an amazing coastal region, of great importance to marine
life, in need of protection

A quote from HWDT:
We face an unprecedented climate emergency and
biodiversity crisis. Our marine environment is under huge
pressure; increasingly busy, noisy and polluted. The
conservation status of all UK whales, dolphins, and
porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans) and our
impact on them is currently unknown. The support from
the Marine Miles will help monitor and protect cetaceans
in areas of critical habitat within our seas.

We have been planning this walk for over a year now, and it’s so exciting that it’s finally almost time! Please help us by donating to the links in our bio - every little help is appreciated!

We’ll be posting regular updates about our walk, on our social media accounts, so follow along on @katie.monkk or @greeneindy to see our route and what we get up to each day!
