Marine Veteran shot 10 times

My brother, Mahmoud Berte, was tragically shot on April 17, 2021 just after 1am. While out with a friend, Mahmoud became the victim of increasing gun violence in the San Francisco Bay area, and all over the country, when he was randomly caught by crossfire at a local Oakland bar. His body was hit by at least 6 -- and, judging from his wounds, possibly as many as 10 -- bullets. Each of those bullets was felt by all who loved him, including me, one of his younger brothers.  Mahmoud is the eldest of 9 siblings and a role model to each and every one of us. Straight out of high school, he was a rifleman in the Marine Corps for four years before leaving with an honorable discharge. Mahmoud grew up in the South Bronx, but went to San Francisco to attend college. Mahmoud studied economics at the City College of San Francisco with a goal of opening his own business one day.  When he was wounded, a miracle was needed for his survival, and a miracle took place when Mahmoud first opened his eyes in the hospital. This miracle, however, came with several bullets in his right leg that broke his femur bone and his knee cap; a shot to one of his main arteries when his abdomen was hit by multiple bullets and a left leg that had to be amputated. This miracle came with a life that has forever been altered, but a man who is willing and eager to take on these new challenges. This miracle came with dozens of surgeries -- and counting -- and a financial burden that needs to be addressed. This miracle came with the need for a prosthetic leg upon recovery so Mahmoud can get back to the things he loves: working out, hanging out with friends and family, and just being active overall.  As Mahmoud continues to fight in the hospital, we ask for donations to help make sure recovery is the only thing he needs to worry about during this tough time.
