Help Mariposas Rebeldes Build a Home in the Woods!

UPDATED April 8th, 2022:
Mariposas Rebeldes is a Queer Latinx-led food and agriculture collective on Muscogee (Creek) Territory, in so-called Atlanta. Following a very successful fundraising campaign last year, we have been able to purchase a 1/3-acre forested lot in South Atlanta that we plan to turn into a food forest and community kitchen.
We can't thank y'all enough for your support. It's been incredible to see everyone showing up for our community and granting us the extraordinary opportunity and privilege to steward this beautiful ecosystem in the South river watershed. This corridor will play host to fruit and nut trees, perennial herbs, flowers, and a milpa where we will grow corn, beans, and squash. But without the infrastructure to process and distribute this bounty, much of it will be left to compost. That's why we plan to build an outdoor kitchen on site with a focus on producing shelf-stable, fermented, or frozen goods with these raw ingredients.
One of the goods that we plan to specialize in is corn-and-bean tempeh, which we have experience making and selling at farmer's markets as Mariposnax. This is a high-quality vegan protein that can be made at home with very cheap ingredients. Our "business model" is inherently incompatible with profit. Rather, the goal is resilience. To have a system in place that can quickly produce high-quality, nutritious food for our community even in the face of market shortages and climate emergency.
In order for this to be a functional land project, however, someone needs to be available to steward the land. The easiest way to make this possible is to provide housing. Therefore, we also want to build a tiny house and set up a few camp sites throughout the forest to accommodate volunteers during large projects.
Finally, we'd like to buy a work truck in order to more easily transport compost, mulch, lumber, and building materials to our site.
If you can't donate, volunteer! We will need all hands on deck and heaps of community input for this project. Follow us on social media for updates and opportunities:
