Marji's medical bills after assault

Donation protected

On January 18th, Marji Dainty was subjected to a brutal and premeditated attempt on her life by her mentally-ill adult son. She is unable to work because of a severe concussion and is faced with massive medical bills. All donations will go Marji's medical expenses and to supporting her recovery.

Earlier in January, Marji moved to Colorado to start a new job, and was able to reconnect with her schizophrenic adult son, who lived nearby in Denver. While alone together on a hike, he violently attacked her, attempting to take her life. Fortunately, Marji was able to escape and nearby hikers called the Sheriff's office. Since her benefits had not yet started at her new job, she is without health insurance and must pay all her bills alone (trauma center, surgeon, surgery, imaging, prescriptions, doctors). Her savings have already been drained. This money would allow Marji to stay in Boulder and continue receiving the medical care she needs, until she is able to work again.

Marji is a beloved friend and mother, whose warmth, generosity, sense of adventure, and joy in life are being challenged in a way which is hard to imagine. Those who know Marji well know she is not one to lay down, and it's not surprising that she is rebounding from this tragic event. After a week in the hospital she is back home in Boulder and engaged in the long process of physical and psychological recovery. There will be many visits to doctors in the coming months, during which time she will be unable to work. She received numerous blows to the head and face and the resulting neurological damage will take time to repair. Marji has some support in Boulder -- her new neighbors have been exceptionally helpful and caring; friends and family have come from afar to visit and care for her, as well -- but this is still a new town to her. Marji is a strong-willed person who is reluctant to ask for help, but it is needed now. If you know Marji, you know of her resiliency and fortitude. Her wounds will heal eventually, but at this moment she needs our support. Please consider giving.

Medical details:

Orbital blowout trauma with muscle entrapment. Orbital floor reconstructive surgery, titanium plate installed, potentially permanent diplopia.
Left eye has vitreous membrane detachment, being monitored now for retinal tears and detachment. Further surgery will be required if it is determined that her retinas been damaged. Moderate-severe hearing loss.
