April 3 Update--Dawn's birthday is tomorrow, April 4, and she could really use some well wishes and friendly support. Mark has moved to a new hospital. Dawn needs help asap moving things around inside her storage locker this week -- can anyone in the Vancouver/Abbotsford area help with that? Original message--Hi, my name is Nancy Calkins, and I am raising funds to help our friends Mark and Dawn Dumas. Dawn was my best friend growing up and I am heartbroken that these wonderful, hard-working friends have found themselves in this grievous situation because of complications from COVID and health problems.
Mark and Dawn have been professional animal trainers for the film industry for 35 years+ and suddenly lost their business and home because of complications in the industry related to COVID as well as personal health problems. Mark has always been one of the strongest people, and now he is in the hospital with Lewy body dementia, causing Dawn to manage solo. Dawn is a strong person, even so, she has been facing a tremendous number of issues and obstacles over the last two years, including recovering from emergency intestinal surgery and awaiting follow-up back surgery due to injuries working on a film. Dawn and Mark were able to find wonderful homes for Agee the Polar Bear, Billy the Grizzly, and all the other animals. Dawn is hoping Mark will be able to come home to live with her.
During this transition, while Mark is in the hospital and Dawn is trying to manage the apartment expenses, they need $5,000 (Canadian which is about $3,800 US) for rent for the apartment Dawn moved to and gas so that Dawn can travel to see Mark while she seeks work & applies for social benefits.
