As many of you know, Mark (dad) contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized on Aug 2, 2020. He was then admitted to the ICU in Corpus Christi around August 8, 2020 at Christus Spohn Shoreline. After being intubated, he needed specialized continued care that was only available in San Antonio, Tx where he was transported by HaloFlight on August 15, 2020. He then received the heart and lung machine to continue his care and hopefully recovery.
He has now been in an ICU Ecmo unit in San Antonio, Tx for over a month. With Mark's work status and Elizabeth's and families work status' not guaranteed, the stress of travel has slowly crept up on the family. This is the last thing that mom has wanted to do, but with the abundance of people asking how they can help, this seems to be an option that will surely be of great help through the duration of dad's care.
The goal is the toughest decision to make on here, but these funds will cover costs of travel as dad is in a city away from home, and his medical costs. The machine he is on on average runs about $55,000 per day in the ICU. Luckily he does have insurance, but if his work drops him because he is out of leave, then we will be in even more of a predicament. Though mom also has critical care insurance through work, COVID patients are not covered, not sure how that works. It is with a heavy heart that I inform everyone that Dad passed on September 13, 2020, after a long and toughly fought battle against COVID-19. I don’t know of anyone else that would have made it as far as he did. In true dad fashion, he was comforting us until the very end. His case and the knowledge learned, will help so many people that are cared for in the future. He was able to take part in his care and only proved that he is the bravest man any of us will ever know. Thank you again, and rest assured that your donations are going directly to the cause and are greatly appreciated.
