On Sunday evening Mark was involved in a motor vehicle accident. He was flown to Rockford and then taken by ambulance to the University of Madison Wisconsin. Due to the dense fog that had settled in he could not be flown by helicopter. We were very concerned about that ride because of the immense amount of pain he was in. He had many tests and scans done and finally on Monday night he got an MRI. It was discovered he had vertebrae putting pressure on the spinal cord in his neck. He was brought right to surgery to have that pressure relieved. During surgery it was discovered that there is some spinal cord damage but they won't know the extent until later when he can get up and move around. He also has many facial fractures and his left eye will need surgery in the future.
He is in the ICU now and the hospital only allows 2 visitors per 24 hours. This policy is very hard for us all to accept. We know many people would like to visit him but it is just not a possibility at this time. I will get information as to how people can send cards if they would like.
The hospital does not allow anyone to stay in the patient rooms over night so my Mom has had to get a hotel room nearby to stay in each night.
I have had a lot of people who love our Dad ask how they can help. Everyone who believes in the power of prayer can please, of course, pray for him, pray for our Mom to help her get through this and all of our family.
Our Dad has a giant heart of gold and I hope all your thoughts and prayers let him know just how much everyone really loves and appreciates him. As all of you know he never wants or asks for any special attention, even though he gives so much of his spare time without hesitation to the City of Morrison and its residents.
I have had many people ask if they can help with the costs so if anyone would like to help with the costs of food, hotel, gas or just wants to help out that would be incredibly appreciated. Any donations can be dropped off at TBK Bank in Morrison and put into Susan Schuler's account or here on gofundme. Mark is going to be in the hospital or a rehabilitation facility for many weeks to come and quite possibly months.
Thank you all for your love and prayers, please keep them coming and feel free to comment daily on his Caring Bridge page: https://www.caringbridge.org/public/markschuler
I know he will be very overwhelmed when he can sit up and see how much we all love him.
