Mark Twain Mosaic Wall

Mark Twain Middle School in Venice/Mar Vista has a beautiful mosaic mural created in 2000. It was a collaborative effort led by Venice Builds, local Venice artists like Augustin Gonzalez and Mark Twain students. The mosaic faces Walgrove Avenue so it is the view that greets not only students as they go to school each day but also the community at large as they drive by on this busy street or view it from the neighborhood
This wall has long been a symbol of the hope we have for our students' future and a landmark of the neighborhood. Recently we noticed this beloved public art piece had started to separate from the wall. LAUSD Local District West removed and repaired the most urgent of the tile work. We are thankful for the district’s immediate attention and the LAUSD tile workers’ excellent craftsmanship. However, there is remaining work to do to ensure the mural's longevity which we understand may cost in excess of $32,0000. Please join us in raising $50,000 to pay for any further repairs and restoration of this historic public art piece and to support continuity of the arts at Mark Twain Middle School.
Friends of Mark Twain Middle School: Friends of Mark Twain is a charitable 501(C)3 supporting Mark Twain Middle School in Los Angeles, California, at Title 1 school. FOMT’s mission is to bring parents, teachers and the community together to support Mark Twain’s students whereby they can be successful and fulfilled in their community and on a global level.
FOMT fundraises for fieldtrips, afterschool programs, beautification of school grounds, the Seeds to Plate Garden program, restorative practices/restorative justice, Communities in Schools, after school sports, teacher support and professional development, and 8th grade culmination. We are currently raising money for an art teacher, as Mark Twain does not have one. We also hope to do another community mural project with the students in the future.
