Marlene Joyce Winningar McGowen, a long-time resident of Los Altos Hills passed away peacefully on February 19, 2020, at El Camino Hospital. She was the daughter of Nona and Frederick Winnigar, a loving mother to children Kelly and Jeff and an amazing Nana to her four grandchildren--Marlene, Emily, Miles, Jack, Brody, and granddog Koda.
Born in San Jose, CA, Marlene attended both Castilleja School in Palo Alto and Los Gatos High School. Early in her career, she was an aspiring model for Polaroid, Brooks Brothers, and other local businesses. She met Richard “Bart” McGowen in San Carlos, CA in the early 1950s and they were happily married over 50 years.
Marlene and Bart were active in the Los Altos community and were well known and loved local realtors late in life. Always at the ready to tell a good story and bring laughter to those around her, she was a larger than life character who touched many and will be deeply missed.
After the passing of her beloved husband Bart in 2012, Marlene lived a relatively quiet and austere life, spending time with her family and closest friends. Living by modest means, she was unable to adequately plan for her own passing.
As dear friends of Marlene and the McGowen family, we ask for donations of any size to assist the family with Marlene’s funeral expenses.
