On February 7th, 2016 A bright and shining star was dimmed when our family was called to give us the news that Marques Gaines was killed in a senseless "accident". Marques was a remarkable brother, son, friend, and loved one. He was a peaceful person that we will miss forever. A horrific tragedy.

I am Phyllis Nelson, Marques' guardian and the person that stepped into the shoes of his parents to raise Marques upon their passing when he was 9 years old. Marques grew up in Atlanta Georgia and lived an amazingly happy life even with his losing both of his parents at such a young age.

We have since found out the majority of the horrible and unnecessary story.
The story told thus far is that Marques was leaving after hanging with friends at Mother Hubbard Tavern in Chicago when he was approached by the assailant. The video showed that Marques tried to walk away but the guy hit him in the back on the head knocking him into the street. As Marques lay there unconscious, the assailant left the scene and some other guys robbed him of his wallet and phone. A cab driver that was coming around the corner then hit him on the street. NO ONE HELPED HIM! He was just in the street and everyone turned their backs and allowed him to be pummeled. We must wake up and help one another.

Marques' funeral service is this coming Saturday February 20th at 11am.

We are now putting a campaign together to help the police to find the assailant and the guys that robbed him. We must go to Chicago as the police will not give us any details over the phone. We are putting this together to also place a reward out there for any information that can help us to find these guys. THIS WAS SO UNNECESSARY. Marques was a great person. This is devastating to our family and his friends. Help us to find a way to bring these criminals to justice....

Please find it in your heart to help us to solve this. Please find it in your heart to not allow Marques' death to go unsolved. WE NEED YOUR HELP.

We LOVED Marques and he was such a light in the life of all that he met. He was such a remarkable young man.

We really need the funds as soon as possible to get this investigation pushed from our end. Lets not let yet ANOTHER life end in vain.

Our family would be so sincerely thankful for any help and assistance that you could give to us.. Marques was an amazing writer, dancer, and overall person. It aches my heart to even have to write this.
