Martina Create a Curl Curriculum

Hi!

Im Martina & I have been a hairstylist for over 13 years now. Since 2018, I have been focused of providing services to the tight curly & coily community who wear their hair in its natural curl pattern. If you’re a curly person, you already know that resources are very limited in finding a stylist in your area that really can cut, color & style our hair well. That’s because the education really isn’t available. At least not in the beginning stages of a hairstylists career. 

Curl classes are expensive & not available in all areas, so it leaves a lot of potentially great curl specialists out on the mix. Besides the fact that there is barely any representation in salons, brands, marketing or media. If we don’t see ourselves represented, or have a space where we can go to be inspired & feel the authenticity of our culture, the salon being the biggest part of that, I feel we lose a little of our light. I want to create more spaces to provide us with more light & amplification.

It is a giant dream of mine to provide the hair industry with a tight curl curriculum that can be used in beauty school to teach all the things that us curly folk wished hairstylists actually learned in school. Some examples being how to asses our hair & scalp, how to cut our hair in its natural form not only straightened & when to use each technique & why. This curriculum will be comprehensive from styling, cutting to coloring, providing safe spaces, and how to cope with the emotional side of hair trauma that your guests may be coming in with or currently experiencing. It is designed to go side by side with the “traditional” hair curriculum. Beauty school is currently based on the very outdated European Beauty Standard of smooth & straight & doesn’t make room for authenticity or difference & I plan to change that.

I have been working on building this curriculum between life & work over the past year or so. I’ll need to hire someone to format everything to make a textbook, worksheets, lesson plans, etc. Which also includes photography & editing for the textbook & marketing materials to shop the Curriculum to beauty schools. The curriculum will need to be published, copywritten/trademarked which is all a hefty expense.

I ask that if you can, you to donate to the future of an industry that I love that is far far behind with the times, representation, & equity. The effect of this curriculum will be that long lasting.
