Martins Uresti’s Medical Bills & Funeral Expenses

Donation protected
Hello everyone, I come to everyone with a humble heart. I never anticipated ever having the need to write one of these, but life has other plans. I am fundraising for my Step Father, Martin Uresti who is a 78 year-old man with a serious passion for music & life. He is a father, step-father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a brother & devoted husband. He’s currently on life support at Stanford Hospital. In 2010 Martin was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, a rare genetic disease affecting the lungs. August 14, 2014 Martin received a life saving double lung transplant at Stanford. It took 3 months (2 months in ICU). During that time, my parents had the burden of affording the Medical bills due to the transplant but also pay for living expenses of a temporary apartment near the hospital. This was a huge financial burden. The transplant afforded Martin more years to spend with his friends & family & for that we are all very grateful. In 2021 his wife Grace, my mother, made the decision to retire early from being a full time teacher to now his full time care giver at home. Since his transplant, Martin has been in and out of the hospital for periods of days to months. Despite the daily challenges he faces, he continues to fight his condition with courage and optimism. Before his recent hospitalization, he was on dialysis 4xs a day from home, administered by his wife Grace.  On June 27th he was admitted to St. Agnes Hospital and stayed for 3 days until he was discharged with the flu & bronchitis. Returning days later as his illness progressed to pneumonia. After 10 days in the hospital, his health declined rapidly. He wasn’t eating and his levels weren’t improving. He was weak, unable to fight the illness, complained of stomach pain frequently which began panic attacks.  On July 12th he was transferred to Stanford at my mother's request via ambulance and was placed in ICU. He was treated for pneumonia, malnourishment, influenza, bed sores, human meta infection, and intestinal blockage. The dedicated team at Stanford have worked diligently to improve his health over the last decade, and continues to do so today. His levels were improving until last night he took a bad turn. He’s now intubated, on a ventilator, & a feeding tube. It’s imperative that he continue to receive care and the cost for my mom to stay by his side has become a hardship to maintain. Although my stepfather has medical insurance coverage, the expenses associated with treatment have far exceeded the coverage. Fundraising was not even a resort and my mom adamantly refused help but after further evaluation of the resources, their fixed income, and financial need It’s imperative they receive the support that they need to ensure they are taken care of and supported. Every donation will go directly towards financing his medical care and the cost to keep his support system by his side, hopefully hospice support, and eventually help for funeral services. As they have been investing all their money on extending his life, they have not planned for burial expenses. This support means giving my family a chance to focus on Martins end of life plan without the worry of cost & making decisions based on financial ability as opposed to his best interest. It's about allowing us as a family to focus on cherishing our moments together, rather than worrying about mounting medical bills and funeral costs. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal and are incredibly grateful for any assistance. Whether by donation, emotional support, physical presence, sharing this campaign, or sending positive thoughts & prayers our way.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your generosity and compassion make a world of difference to my parents Grace & Martin and to our family. This has all been very overwhelming and we all desperately hope for my step father’s recovery so he may spend the rest of his time left with family on home hospice.
