Latest on his care expenses: 10k a month for live in care giver. Plus, just under a million in medical spent for his ICU and nursing center over the past year.
On February 9th, 2018, our lives changed in one of the worst ways possible. None more so than our Uncle Marty and his fiance, Kristie. The result of a clueless driver pulling out in front of them while on their motorcycle has forever altered their lives. Our father nearly escaped the rogue car and looked back to a scene that he wishes he could forget.
Uncle Marty broke his neck, leg and knee. Kristie's leg basically blew apart. Uncle was placed on a ventalator and feeding tube, then "labeled" as a partial paraplegic; he has to relearn to walk, go to the actual bathroom, and feed himself again; tasks many of us "normal" people take for granted. Here we are a few months later, happy to report they are alive, but regret to report they are not as well as can be.
To live a life of great purpose, one might prefer their hands to aid in self-survival, but uncle's therapy has been slow due to two major factors:
1. His body broke in a lot of places which delayed his physical and occupational therapy.
2. The insurance approval took too much time, and was eventually accepted well beyond the time he should have started therapy. In addition, the facility only offers 1 hr of physical therapy a day. Can you imagine the need to relearn motor functions quickly (partly because of the cost) on just one hour a day?
"Quickly" - This is an important word. He desperately wants to walk again, to feed himself again, to hold his grand-babies again, to care for his fiance again, to hug his son again...to make his nieces mojitos again.
Regardless of the length of this therapy, he is temporarily getting it, however, he CANNOT receive this care unless he pays a $4,000 per month out-of-pocket fee. Every 1st of the month, Kristie must hand over (from her wheelchair) a cashiers check for Marty to stay at this facility to keep on keeping on. The only other option is home, where there is no professional care, no single floor, amature catheter care, no nutritionist, no burly men to move and support him to stand, etc. I've recently learned that medical bills from the first few months and ICU are in the hundreds of thousands (something they really aren't concerned about at this point). Right now, its making sure he can stay at the Lake Forest Nursing Center where he has been making progress and with staff familiar with his program and progress.
If there is ANY AMOUNT you can offer to aid in Marty's fight to live a life of greater purpose and pride, he and our family will forever be grateful to you.
We want the world to know how special and spectacular of a human being our Uncle Marty is and to humbly ask for your help, because:
He's the "cool" uncle.
He's the uncle that buys you tires when you're 17.
He's the uncle that will get you hooked on Bob Marley and mojitos.
He's the uncle that will get you sick off of mojitos.
He's the uncle that will give you his sleeveless shirt right off his back.
He's the uncle that will put a roof over your head.
He's the uncle that laughs with you and at you.
He's the uncle that will attend your birthday party.
He's the uncle that will give you 100 lottery tickets as a present.
He's the uncle that loves his family and friends more than himself.
Most of all, he's the uncle that won't give up the fight.
With love from his neices,
Coelette & Rachelle Chenier
