Maryland Elementary Ukulele Club

Hi, My name is Reagan Duncan, or Miss Duncan as my students know me. I'm a first grade teacher at Maryland Elementary in Vista CA. My goal...to change the world one kid at a time. Creating opportunities for students that they might never have had can shift their trajectory in life. A small change now creates great and lasting changes later in life. Why not start small? Help me bring a culture of music to my school. Through a chance meeting on a walk through my neighborhood I met Jessica Baron, the founder of the non-profit, Guitars In The Classroom. She had me signed up for my first ukulele class in a matter of minutes and my first ukulele in my hands soon after. I was hooked immediately! My virtual students loved hearing me play and learning songs and even helping me write new songs to learn new concepts. Weaving song, ukulele and fun throughout my lesson kept it engaging and kept my attendance up as well. Thanks to fundraising efforts and generous donations of both friends and strangers I was able to start this year off with a uke in every child's hands. We play every day. Ukulele daily is brining music, joy and learning together which has helped create a highly engaging classroom.
The love for the uke is contagious! There are now 16+ educators at my school site that are learning ukulele and how to incorporate music into their daily routines. Now it's time to take it to the next level and this is when I need your help. The next step is ukulele club, an after school ukulele club where students can begin learning how to play and to song write. Through fundraising efforts I've been able to purchase ukuleles for the first group of students and the inaugural club is off to a great start. In order to expand the club throughout the school we will need to continue purchasing ukuleles. With the help of Guitars in the Classroom we will be able to keep up with the demand, but will need increased funding to keep it up. I thank you in advance for your consideration. Help make this program great, help shift our students trajectories and change the world!
