MASIL Exchange

Hi!

My name is Yarramun Conole and I´m a 19 year old Barada, Barna and Kabalbara woman from Central Queensland. I´m currently studying a Bachelor of Arts course the University of Melbourne, double majoring in Linguistics and Indigenous Australian Studies. I also have a particular passion for youth empowerment and development.

I have been fortunate enough to have been invited to attend MASIL´s exchange to Chile next year in February. The exchange is focused on initiating a cultural and historic exchange between Mapuche Indigenous communities in Chile and Aboriginal peoples in Australia in order to develop a holistic interchange and provide a complete picture of daily life experience in Aboriginal/Mapuche culture including: history, culture, language, relationship with the land, education, ecology, religion, relationships with civil society and social movements. This work will examine the challenges faced by Indigenous communities trying to maintain and develop Aboriginal/Mapuche culture in both countries.

The exchange will focus on the sharing of common experiences from the trip attendees in hopes of strengthening our communities so that we may lead new and powerful struggles for land rights and culture preservation. It is an important step in fostering solidarity and a mutual understanding of the issues facing indigenous peoples today.

However, I need your help to get there. The total cost of the trip, accommodation, meals, transport, country entrance fee, essentials and payment to local communities in exchange for food and their hospitality comes to around $3000. However, thanks to the genorsity and tremoundous efforts by MASIL and LASNET, the amount I will have to pay has been significantly decreased as a portion of my expenses is covered by their fundraising efforts throughout the past year. The work that both these organizations do is integral to fostering a community for Latin American peoples living in Australia as well as supporting self determination efforts too.

Part of the exchange will also involve the filiming of a documentary. It will a particular focus on the themes of the exchange as well as culture, land rights and indigenous people's relationships to their respective lands, assimilation, transnational corporations and their relationships with indigenous peoples in each country, racism and resistance and many more themes.

I will be traveling on this exchange with members from Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance, who have been instrumental in organizing grassroots community events and maintaining a voice for Aboriginal self determination, sovereignty and liberation. I´ll also be traveling with my cousin Blossom Ah Ket, who will be the interpretor for the trip and who has been an incredible source of strength for me and also shares my passion for indigenous rights and self determination. Indigenous communities members from Aotearoa/NZ, Bolivia and Canada will also be attending the exchange.

A tremendous amount of effort and planning has been put into this exchange, and besides donating, a share of this exchange on social media would be a great way of showing your support!

Please check out Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance and MASIL's joint fundraiser too!

Thank-you and yours in solidarity,
