Masks for Healthcare Workers
Donation protected
Update: We have expanded our campaign to help healthcare workers nationwide.
We've all seen the headlines in recent days about the dire, urgent need for masks and other protective wear for our healthcare workers. We cannot let our frontline workers go to war with COVID-19, unarmed and without gear. Supply of masks is not the problem. Manufacturers in China currently have millions of masks, and are continuing to produce them daily. Even before COVID-19 emerged, China produced roughly half of the world’s masks. During the outbreak, it expanded its mask production by nearly 12-fold. We need money to take those masks off their hands and put them in the hands of our hospitals. Through longstanding business relationships of the team members behind this Go Fund Me campaign, we have access to purchase large volumes of personal protection equipment from FDA-certified manufacturers to be shipped to California. 100% of donations will go to purchasing and delivering N95, KN95, surgical masks, and other personal protection equipment for frontline healthcare workers.
Please join us in donating ANY amount you're able to, so that we can obtain as many masks as possible for healthcare workers in California. As COVID-19 cases increase exponentially, we need to ramp up alongside it to protect our healthcare workers.
Because time is of the essence, we will order batches of masks as the funds come in so healthcare workers can begin receiving them right away. The cost of masks vary from day to day (depending on factors including, quantity ordered, shipping rate, competing demands on supply), but N95 masks are $3.00 to $4.00 a piece, KN95 masks are $1.50 to $2.00 a piece, and surgical masks are $0.40 to $0.80 cents a piece (prices include shipping). Isolation gowns are $0.70 to $4.00 per gown, and face shields are $3.00 to $5.00 per unit.
Our team members, located in Southern and Northern California, will work with local healthcare workers to efficiently distribute the masks to any healthcare facility in need. We will try to give priority to ERs, ICUs, and departments treating COVID-19 patients. In the past week, we have heard firsthand stories and requests for help from friends and family in the healthcare industry. They have posted on social media, linking news articles reporting on the growing desperateness of the situation and pleading with the public to donate unused masks to hospitals. Let's show our healthcare workers that we hear them and that we will not let them meet this challenge alone. Even if you're unable to donate monetarily, please share this link to spread the word.
The COVID-19 crisis has battered this country and the world. We citizens feel somewhat helpless quarantined at home, waiting for government officials to take action. Crisis is a cruel but unifying event, and right now, we have the opportunity to make an impactful collective difference. Most experts say California has not seen the peak of the epidemic. Let's make sure we're ready when that point comes.
Please check this page for updates on our progress. We will be posting photos of products purchased and delivery to healthcare workers. Lastly, if you believe you can offer assistance in any way other than monetarily, we're happy to hear from you. Thank you!
Current Status of Mask Shortage Across the U.S.:
“In settings where facemasks are not available, [healthcare professionals] might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort.” Updated CDC Guidelines on "Strategies For Optimizing the Supply of Facemasks"
LARGE or CORPORATE Donations:
For large or corporate donations, we have partnered with Community Youth Center SF, a 501c non-profit to allow for tax-deductible donations. To keep overhead low, we ask that only larger donations go to CYCSF, so they can volunteer their service without any fees. Please message us for more details.
