NEED: Masks for Homeless Shelters

Fighting the coronavirus in homeless shelters is nearly impossible.

Medical researchers say the 550,000 people currently homeless across the United States have a double vulnerability to the coronavirus (source). Within dense quarters, the virus can easily transmit from person to person where people are coughing and sneezing without masks. For both the residents and staff, leaving 6 ft apart is not conducive when they live and work in congregate shelters. Homeless shelter residents are also a vulnerable population who are disproportionately older, with deteriorated immune systems, and not cared for.

Researchers found that the pandemic will likely kill over 3,400 homeless people across the United States. Up to 1,200 of those deaths could come from California, and over 7,000 homeless people could be hospitalized in the state due to COVID-19, according to a report published Friday March 27 by the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and two other universities (source ).

While policymakers across the nation are working towards creating emergency housing arrangements to allow for social distancing among the homeless, as well as putting a moratorium on evictions to ensure that no more people become homeless during the pandemic, they need immediate measures to slow the spread.

SOLUTION: Reusable Mask Production in South Korea

Everyone should be wearing masks. Those who are sick with the new coronavirus can help limit the spread of respiratory droplets by wearing a mask, and that applies to those who are asymptomatic or undiagnosed as well (source ).

We have called several homeless shelters, most of them do not have masks at this point.
To provide support, we’ve secured a production line in our factory in South Korea for reusable masks made of ABT-UV+ antimicrobial fabric.

PRODUCT: About the Mask

Our masks are made of medical fabrics aerosilver  with 99.9% antimicrobial effect, designed to be protective for the wearer as well as their neighbors. Reusable for 100 wears by handwashing, they are sustainable and useful in this dire time of mask shortages.

Manufactured in partnership with Hyosung, a global leader in textile manufacturing, each ABT-UV+ mask is $3.125 USD, including the cost of the actual mask, shipping, and labor.

100% of the donation will go towards the making of the masks. If we surpass the $5,000 goal, we will be ordering more masks with the additional amount.

PROCESS: How the Funds will be Used

Once we raise $5,000, the process will look like this:

1) We order 1,600 masks to be made in our factory in South Korea (one-day turnaround).
2) We ship the masks to Los Angeles, California (5-day shipping).
3) We distribute the masks to homeless shelters across the U.S. including:

+ Los Angeles Mission
+ St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles
+ The Midnight Mission
+ Joann House  (group housing)
+ Baker House  (group housing)
+ Johnson House  (group housing)
+ Los Angeles Youth Network  (group housing)
+ Jenesse Center  (group housing)
+ Youth Homes

This is a growing list.
If anyone has a place in mind, please feel free to write to us on where we can distribute!
