Our names are Carrie and Chelsea and we are friends and neighbors with the Barlow family. We are here to cheer Mason on and provide support to the Barlow Family in their love and care for their sweet 4 year old, Mason:

Many friends and family have been following, so many of you know Mason Barlow and how some of the last 4 months have been for him and his family. For those that are new, we wanted to share a little about his diagnosis.

While on vacation out of state, Mason was brought to the ER on Thanksgiving Day after concerning signs including vomiting and severe headache. A CT scan found that Mason had a very large brain tumor that needed to be removed as soon as possible. This discovery completely turned their world upside down.

Mason was admitted and a day and a half later underwent his first major brain surgery which was over 9 hours long. Only 25% of the tumor was able to be removed at that time, so a second surgery was performed 3 days later to remove the remaining 75%.

Unfortunately, a severe and unexpected complication came about as a result of surgery, called “posterior fossa syndrome”. It left Mason in a coma like state after surgery, and the unknowns of when he might return to previous functioning weighed heavily.

Recovery from surgery was still taking time when the Barlows unfortunately found out that his tumor was indeed cancerous. Mason needed 6 weeks of daily radiation to treat. His diagnosis is “Posterior Fossa Ependymoma Group A”, a type of brain cancer.

Mason has been completing his daily radiation and therapies for the past month and a half and will ring the bell for his last radiation treatment on Monday, March 4th. After over 100 days of receiving care out of state, Mason will be able to return to Nevada! Through many hours of therapy, Mason has made amazing progress in learning how to eat, speak, and move his body again.

Mason still has a road ahead of him as he continues therapy at home and follows up with out-of-state cancer scans and care every 3 months.
