Matching Grant, Preserve the Calkins House Museum
Tax deductible
Preservation Connecticut has generously awarded the Calkins Family Association the 1772 Foundation Grant of $10,000! This is a matching-fund grant. We must have $10,000 in hand to receive the grant money.
The funds will go toward a new roof for the house.
1. The Hugh Calkins House sits on a half-acre of land that dates to the year 1659, when the Town of Norwich, CT, was bought from the Mohegan Indians and first plotted out.
2. The CFA saved it from being torn down. We are preserving it for the public as a research center and museum. Come visit someday.
3. While added onto over the years, this house is one of the oldest in Norwich.
4. The central beams in the house were dated by tree ring analysis. They date minimally to 1740.
5. Even older is the stone foundation and a dirt cellar floor. Hand-hewed wooden pegs holding up the roof trusses point to how rare this building is, not to mention 300 years of history.
The greatest need is a roof. The leaky roof dormers have severely decayed the back section of the roof, which leaked to the first-floor ceiling. Replacing the roof will give the house a sigh of relief as that stops the decay and begins the restoration.
A $5 donation goes a long way.
