Math Tutoring for the Children of South Africa

This semester I am interning with Ukulapha which is a non-profit organization. Ukulapha is a community outreach project supporting the children of Slangspruit, Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Ukulapha's goal is to improve teaching and learning conditions at Slangspruit Primary School. While interning for Ukulapha, I have noticed the need for extra support in the classroom, especially in Mathematics. All classes have 45 or more children to 1 teacher, and in subjects like Math where extra attention is needed, the majority of children fall behind. I have spent most of my time working with the grade 7 class, and a good amount of the children still do not know how to count. However, since the passing grade in South Africa is now 30%, children get pushed through school even though they do not understand the material. Therefore, I am starting a fundraising initiative to hire and fund math tutors from the local community to spend one-on-one time with the children that are struggling with math. It is essential that these tutors be hired from the local community, as the unemployment rate among young adults living in the township are over 50%. These individuals are educated and are unable to find work, as systemic socio-economic discrimination is still prevalent in all areas of South Africa, as well as the lack of less skilled jobs available. Therefore, this initiative will not only help the children expand their knowledge base, but it will fund currently unemployed educated people that are living in extreme poverty.
