Matiyas Bekuretsion
Donation protected
On the 23 November 2020, we lost Matiyas Bekuretsion our beloved hero at the young age of 16. On Monday night Matiyas along with his cousin and two friends went to Scarborough beach in Perth, Western Australia, to celebrate his final ATAR exam. While swimming Matiyas, his cousin and both their friends got caught in rough waters making it difficult to get out. Matiyas and his two friends managed to get out of the rip however, when he saw that his cousin was struggling and unable to get out, he selflessly and courageously swam back to save her. After a long struggle against the rip, he used his final strength and breath to lift and push her out of rip far enough to be saved by a bystander. Tragically Matiyas was unable to keep his head above water. This act itself is a testament to his selfless, kind and loving nature. Matiyas moved to Perth Australia two years ago with the aspirations of studying medicine at university, he was one of the most brightest and intelligent students with a promising future. Matiyas's bravery and selflessness is proof that heroes do live among us. He faced an extraordinary circumstance and acted with courage, honour and self-sacrifice, he is the true definition of a hero and his memory will live on forever.
The shock and the hurt Matiyas's family feel can never be fixed but I am hoping that by raising financial support through this gofundme page we can ease some of the financial stress. I have set up this page to raise enough money for the family to cover all the funeral expenses and to also bring Zufan Mebrahtu, Matiyas's biological mother to Perth Western Australia from Ethiopia. This will allow her to mourn alongside the rest of her family and say her final goodbyes to her one and only son, who she sadly had not seen since he left Ethiopia two years ago. All the remaining proceeds will go directly Zufan Mebrahtu.
We appreciate all your contributions and kindness and would like to say thank you. We are ever grateful for any support you can give whether it be through donations or sharing this page with your friends on social media.
