As the sister of Matt we are thankful for dear friends Traci and Doug for raising money for Matt's recovery. They have successfully completed a fundraiser through work partners to help support Matt, appropriately directing money to bills to stay afloat with a roof over their head. He is an extremely hard worker and tries not to let anything hold him down. He has always been very vivacious and lives life full throttle. I have never seen anybody more hardworking and courageous. Through many of life's tribulations he has always fought his way back.
He has had a blood clot since December 2012 that some doctors were treating as Reynaud's when ultimately it was a blood clot. He has had many doctors visits over the past few years for sores that were not healing, pain, and other symptoms but it was still over looked. March 2016 he was finally admitted to Methodist to break up a "developed clot" after dragging his leg around in pain for months. His clot cleared in his leg from above the knee to below the knee but unfortunately not all. His doctor at the time would not give us a date or time frame that they would try the bypass that he kept talking about. His sister finally convinced him after a week of constant messages and intense pain to go see Dr. Baxter at UNMC. He went to UNMC ER on a Sunday and was in for the bypass that Tuesday, that was unsuccessful. Dr. Baxter could not believe that he was living in the pain that he was as long as he was because his leg was "dead" and his artery was basically a gum consistency. Matt had his below the knee amputation 2 days later. While trying to recover he was denied disability because below the knee amputation does not necessarily qualify you. He returned to work 1 week later supervising and doing what he could crawling around on his knees. At this time he was dependent on crutches and a walker at home, due to pain from the crutches. He was able to return to full activity at work due to the Iwalk free which is an inexpensive assistive device that allows him to be hands free without being a prosthetic. He currently has a prosthetic that he can not wear due to the pain it has been causing him. He has had a few revisions in between due to the bone being too long and not having enough cushion causing infections where the bone has punctured the skin.
The past few weeks he has been in significant pain with an open wound at the end of his amputated leg. They treated him with an antibiotic that did not help. His sister being adament that is was not the wound returned with him to his appointment. They thought it was a bone infection due to being exposed but once again but she insisted that there was something leading to this. After suggesting a blood clot x-ray's and ultrasounds were completed showing yet another blood clot an inch from his groin. He was admitted to Tuesday October 11, 2016 at UNMC to break up the clot again resulting in a 5 day ICU stay and now another week or so for the revision of the leg October 20, 2016. At this time they are unsure how much exactly they will have to take off but more than likely above the knee. With an above the amputation he will not be able to work with the Iwalk because it is only useful for below the knee, yet again making him dependent on crutches, walkers, and a wheelchair until he can get a prosthetic.
He provides for his three beautiful children. The girls are very active in school and sports and Keaton is up and coming with activities. The kids continue to rely on their father as the sole provider and it will be difficult for him mentally and physically with the inability to do so. Thank you for your consideration on donating it means the world to us as a family, our friends, and Matt himself.
