Help Mr. Matthew Sun enjoy life to the fullest (Stage 4 Colon Cancer)

The faculty at Fraser Academy are sending well wishes and set up this platform to show our support for Matthew Sun as he goes through treatment for stage 4 cancer. Please share with all your loved ones.

A message from Matthew Sun’s wife, Kate:

Only 10 days ago, we thought we had a full life ahead of us - we had all the time in the world. Matt was working as a teacher at Fraser Academy and we enjoyed our active and healthy life together with our little dog, Scully. In the middle of the night last week we rushed Matt to the hospital with suspected appendicitis.

Only 24 hours later we are faced with a diagnosis that floored even our doctors, given that Matt is an active and health-conscious 32-year-old: stage 4 cancer had metastasized into several organs unbeknownst to us. In the words of the doctors, “treatment will slow down the disease, but to be brutally honest, the cancer will kill you.”

The last days have been a whirlwind. With the help of our friends, to whom we are eternally grateful, we were able to get married 2 days after Matt's diagnosis - borrowed wedding dress and all. Matt is now recovering from surgery to remove a tumor and will start chemotherapy in 4 weeks, with treatment bi-monthly.

We know Matt is a fighter and will give it his all to hold the cancer at bay as long as possible. The most current prognosis is that, with a little luck, the chemo will work well enough to give Matt a few more months or even a year or so of good life. In the midst of devastation, we are determined to pack as much life as possible into the time that Matt has left. Matt has always been kind-hearted and optimistic, and has many things he loves. We want him to enjoy them.

For a while now, we have been dreaming about a little camper Van. We thought we would get one after I graduate (I am a PhD student), but now there is no time like the present. A camper van would allow us to travel in between chemo cycles and go places we want to visit as a family. Matt is especially excited about going to Tofino and seeing El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.

The funds raised will help:

• cut back on work to take better care of Matthew
• support travel and accommodation while attending clinical trials to help Matthew fight cancer as long as we can
• make small alterations to our apartment as needed (e.g. railings in the bathroom) that will enable Matthew to be at home more easily
• pay for supplemental treatments not covered my MSP
