Mauritania Documentary featuring Biram Dah Abeid
Donation protected
Hi there! My name is Sébastien Kraft. I am a French-American journalism student in the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University (I live near Washington, D.C.)
This summer, I will be producing a documentary on the slavery crisis in Mauritania (West Africa) as well as the ethnic divisions and racial discrimination that have allowed slavery to persist there. Thus far, I have contacted Biram Dah Abeid, the recipient of the 2013 United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights, and I will interview him this May in Dakar, Senegal.
Further, the purpose of this film is twofold: on one hand, it will serve as my Schreyer Honors Thesis here at Penn State; concurrently, it will be the culmination of the past five years of journalistic work, and I hope to enter this film in a variety of film festivals (including in Los Angeles, where I will be studying in Spring 2022 as part of the Penn State Hollywood Program!)
Moreover, my exposure to this topic began in 2017 with my last short doc, "Shades of Light: The Refugee Crisis Abroad," which I have included here for your perusal: https://youtu.be/GD9vZTYkbLc
Finally, I have created this GoFundMe page because I want to realize the best possible project I can on a college student's budget. Any donation, no matter how small, will be put towards new equipment -- such as, for example, a $180 wireless microphone kit for better interview audio quality.
Thank you very much for your consideration, and please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions! -SK
PS: A couple examples of the work I have already done on this project --
