Service project in Guadeloupe

Donation protected
Hello friends and family!

I am raising money in order to participate in a service program I have been accepted to that will take place in Guadeloupe this summer. This is very important to me because I have been active in community service from a young age and I am exploring a career in the field of social justice. Participating in a service program such as this would be a step in achieving that goal.

I first became involved in community service when I was a 5th grader. I was the kind of kid who worried a lot about the state of the world, so I wanted to do something to feel like I was part of a solution. I started volunteering at a local soup kitchen on Saturdays. Since then, I have been part of an annual toy drive that gathers and distrubutes gifts to kids living under the poverty line in Newark. I help prepare and serve dinners through the Unitarian Universalist Congregation's weekly meal program, MESH.  I am a member of the Center for Social Justice at Montclair High School, where I am actively engaged in a curriculum that focuses on the theme of social justice. We use our knowledge to promote issues of social activism within our community.

The VISIONS program has been helping in Guadeloupe since 1996. Service projects I would be involved in include construction (building park pavilions, school additions, renovating playgrounds) environmental work, and running a day camp. I would also be able to practice my French, because this is an immersive language program too. Unlike other programs of this kind, VISIONS projects are 90% service. One important way to serve is to develop relationships with people from other countries and walks of life. This is another goal of the work I would be doing in Guadeloupe.

The program lasts 2 weeks and costs around $3,500.  I would live in a home that is part of the community along with the other participants and leaders. We rotate worksites 4 days out of the week. The fifth day is a "homebase" day where we grocery shop for future meals, do laundry, do food prep, etc. No cel phones or other electronic devices are permitted for the length of the trip.

I am raising funds in other ways as well and will be using some of my own earnings. I also applied for the program's scholarship. I hope you consider helping to support me in this endeavor - if enough people pitch in five bucks - I'll meet my goal.  Any donations will be greatly appreciated. I will keep everyone posted on my plans, and if I get to go, I will be sure to update you about the experience. Thank you so much!
