MAYA BALL GAME POKTAPOK V World Cup Competition

The Belize Poktapok Association will be hosting the V World Cup Tournament of the Ancestral Maya Ball Game Poktapok, in Belize from 7th-10th December, 2023. Seven countries will be participating, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the United States of America (USA). All countries will have two male and one female teams with the exception of the USA which will have one male team only.

Approximately 230 athletes are expected to participate. This free three day event, the first of its kind in Belize, will be held at The People’s Stadium and Orange Walk Multipurpose Complex in Orange Walk Town. Belize has an outstanding team of youths who have won three consecutive Poktapok World Championships in Guatemala 2017, El Salvador 2019, and Mexico 2021. Team Belize is enthusiastic about the opportunity to emerge as champions once again on their own turf. The Belize Maya Ancestral Sport Poktapok Association and Kanan Miatsil (Guardians of Culture) are jointly organizing the event and are in need of your support to assist us in getting sponsorship from the diaspora and local sponsors in Belize in cash or in-kind.

In our telephone conversation of today, 2nd October 2023 between Ms. Nacia Carrillo/Mr. Raymond Gongora in relation to the hosting of the V World Cup Maya Ball Game Poktapok, in Belize from 7th -10th December, 2023, it was approved that you, Mr. Raymond Gongora, is authorized for all sponsorship collections, (both cash and in-kind), on behalf of Kanan Miatsil & Belize Maya Ancestral Sport, Poktapok Association. Direct transfers and cash contributions can be deposited to Kanan Miatsil, Heritage Account # 5141124.

This is an important initiative for the preservation of the indigenous culture and intangible heritage of the Maya. Our youths will not only have an opportunity to be involved in the tournament and but also showcase with pride their indigenous heritage.
