Maya Mountain food baskets for farmers

Donation protected
Maya Mountain Cacao Ltd (MMC) is a social enterprise in Southern Belize which exports fermented and sun-dried cacao beans for makers of fine chocolate products. MMC has been a supply chain partner to both farmers and chocolate makers since 2010, providing a stable and reliable market for cacao farmers to earn reliable income while at the same time offering excellent quality cacao to the international market. The services that MMC provides impact the livelihoods of cacao farmers and their families both social and financially within the rural communities of Southern Belize.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, the future has never felt so unpredictable. These are challenging times for us all and the farmers who are our partners. MMC is doing everything possible to sustain our daily operations and provide services to our community and the farmers. While there is a lot of uncertainty, we know that we need to adapt fast to our changing reality. Now, more than ever, our community needs us. COVID-19 has affected Belize and residents of the Toledo district, especially those that are farmers in the MMC network, in many ways. Since the pandemic, families have been struggling to stay afloat. The closures of schools and education centers limits learning opportunities especially for farmer’s children within remote communities in Toledo. Additionally, many family members of farmers who provided additional income to the family have lost their jobs due to the collapse of the tourism industry and hospitality. The tourism industry was the largest industry contributing to Belize's GDP and essentially disappeared overnight. Food supply chains have been interrupted and necessary food and sanitizing supplies have become much more expensive for farmers and rural people to access. The limiting of public transportation within the communities’has also impacted the way of living for our people. As a result of these changes, both incomes and access to food have been compromised for our families.

Adapting to the changing reality, Maya Mountain has identified the need to help support our farmer’s network by providing food packages to 27 communities and 333 farmer families within Southern Belize.

Food packages will consist of basic food items, including:
10 lbs flour
10 lbs beans
10 lbs rice
10 lbs sugar
Cacao for chocolate drink
1 bottle cooking oil

As well as sanitizing products to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
1 gal Clorox
1 pk soap powder
1 bottle hand soap
1 bottle sanitizing alcohol

We are so grateful to all of our friends and partners around the world who have been such great supporters to our business for many years now. Continuing to buy Maya Mountain Cacao beans is the best way you can help us over the long term. If it is possible at this time for you to also support our farmer network through a donation of any size, we would be so appreciative and so will the farmers who will have some guaranteed food on the table and sanitizing products for a safe and happy holiday this year.

Thank you!
