Maya's Accident Recovery Fund
Donation protected
Key details:
- Maya was in a biking accident on December 13th.
- She dislocated and fractured her left shoulder, fractured her right elbow, and fractured her jaw. Each of these injuries required surgery. She spent a full week in the Trauma ICU step-down for surgery and recovery.
- Additionally, she broke four teeth that will require dental work (crowns or implants) once her other injuries heal.
- We really don't know how much this will cost at the end of the day. Conservatively, we're estimating the out of pocket cost (after insurance) for medical/dental care to be at least $15,000. This is more than half of Maya's annual income. You can read the full story with more details below.
Full story:
On Sunday, December 13th Maya was biking with her partner, Sagen, when she was injured in an accident. Luckily, several passersby happened to be medical professionals and helped Maya until the ambulance arrived. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she received excellent care from the surgeons, nurses, and care partners. For that, she is very thankful.
Maya was wearing her helmet which likely saved her life and/or saved her from severe brain trauma. However, she did dislocate and fracture her left shoulder, fracture her right elbow, and fracture her jaw. All three of which required surgery. Maya is feeling much better now that she has plates and screws holding her fractures together. After a week on the trauma floor, Maya was able to go home and has been recovering there under excellent care provided by Sagen and her family.
Maya still has a long way to go. Her jaw will be wired shut for at least 3 weeks, maybe as long as 6 weeks, and she will be unable to chew foods until a couple of weeks after she gets the wires cut off. She is working on exercises such as touching her nose and raising her arms above her head. Maya has extensive bruises and swelling around her injuries, however, these will subside with time and rest. In terms of long-term effects, she is experiencing some numbness around her lower lip and chin and in her right hand. The doctors are unsure whether the numbness will totally go away but are hopeful that over time it will improve. Maya might experience osteoarthritis in her shoulder and elbow due to the seriousness of the injuries but she's dutifully working on her home exercises to mitigate the likelihood of this.
Maya is feeling optimistic and very very grateful for all of her loved ones who have taken care of her and supported her during this time. She is also thankful that she has health insurance. However, given that the pre-insurance cost will be in hundreds of thousands, her medical and dental costs will still be incredibly high. This GoFundMe has been created to help offset some of these bills. We don’t the exact cost yet, as billing is a long and complicated process, but we estimate somewhere around $10,000 out of pocket. We will make adjustments to the GoFundMe amount along the way as expenses are known.
If you are based in Nashville and would like to help with some meals (soups, smoothies, milkshakes) for Maya, please DM, text, or email Maya or Sagen!
Following Maya's recovery, if there are remaining funds, they will be donated to mutual aid networks and local community organizations here in Nashville, like Gideon's Army and Worker's Dignity.
