One Love, One Heart. Jamaica Health Trip 2019

My name is Akya Myrie. I am 25 years old and a current 3rd Year Medical Student at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY! My brother, who is autistic and has special needs, developed permanent brain damage in Jamaica because he did not have access to timely medical care. Several days after he was born, he began having uncontrollable seizures and the closest emergency care was over 50 miles away. His experience inspires me each day to seek opportunities that allow me to work with vulnerable populations that may experience these same barriers to health care. Many of the residents in Jamaica are uninsured or underinsured, and face transportation barriers when trying to access health care. They have a significant amount of chronic health problems, reside in geographically isolated areas, and do not have a sufficient number of health care providers to meet the demands for service. Poor health literacy often adds to the issues many people face. I aim to help improve access to treatment in these heavily underserved communities.
However, this missions trip is more than just an opportunity to help; it is my way of saying Thank You. I am Jamaican by descent and will be the first physician in my entire family. I am deeply rooted in my culture. Being Jamaican isn’t just a nationality, it’s an experience. Though I was not born there, my people feel like home....and I am ready to go home to do all that I can to show my gratitude. With your help, I can make this possible!
I will be joining the American-Caribbean Experience (ACE) Non-Profit Organization in their one week October Medical Missions Trip. With more than 30 years experience working in Jamaica and a deep understanding and passion for the country, ACE serves as a model for successful community outreach. Additionally, while making a direct impact during their time in Jamaica, volunteers often return home with a new understanding and passion for service which results in continued ministry to those in need throughout the globe. The organization hosts 5+ missions trips a year allowing for continuity of care for many of the patients they serve. In working with the Jamaican Ministry of Help, their teams are able to make regular visits to the government clinics, enabling these communities to receive the care and treatment they so desperately need. By holding regular clinics, the health problems of the communities are treated regularly, decreasing the acuity of illnesses. They serve over 2200 patients each year at 6 different local clinics.
Please support in any way that you can! And please pray for me as I prepare for this new experience. The funds will go towards accommodations, transportation to various clinic sites, and supplies to help treat our patients (e.g medications). I will be sure to take many pictures so that you can see your investment at work! For now, check out these awesome photos from previous trips:
If you are interested in joining me or any other mission, I have provided the link below for more information. Feel free to message me to discuss further. Non medical volunteers as well as medical professionals are needed for the teams. Dental and pediatric services are also in high demand!
Thank you all so much! I am forever grateful
