McClure Elementary's 1st Sport Club

I am writing on behalf of the students and by extension, the community of McClure Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. McClure is located in an area of Tulsa known as "P61" which is notorious for extremly high poverty and an equally high crime rate. Our entire student population receives free breakfast and lunch services and as a school, we provide many additional supports to assist the students and families from our community. I am a 6th grade teacher at McClure and am currently in my 3rd year at this site. I have taught in Tulsa Public Schools for 9 years and have never been more dedicated, driven , or passionate about providing the students at my school with positive experiences and instilling in them a sense motivation to become successful, contributing citizens. Along with myself, our PE teacher, Coach Mike McShane, and our school partner, Coach Mike Carter are extremely excited about starting the McClure Sports Club and see this as just the beginning.
Over the past three years, I have put together a soccer team for the 5th and 6th graders at McClure. We have never been able to participate in an official league but have been able to set up some games with a few local teams and the kids have thoroughly enjoyed every opportunity to play. Coach McShane and Coach Carter also just completed our first ever basketball season with the same age group and we are starting this campaign because we want to extend this idea of a McClure Sports Club to more students and more schools. The difference in behavior, motivation to learn, and desire to succeed I have noticed in my students who are part of a team has been tremendous and I want this to become a part of our schoolwide culture.
The funds would be used to purchase two regulation sized soccer goals, uniforms and equipment for participating students, and marketing expenses to create a city wide league for other schools with similar demographics to McClure. The idea is to have our school be the host site for a free soccer league that would serve students in grades K-6 as well as basketball teams that would include the same grade levels. The league would be open to students at our school as well as students from surrounding schools who are interested. Students participating in the league would be required to maintain a C average, have good attendance, and no extreme behavior reports while participating. Sports are an incredible motivator to help correct these common issues schools with high poverty face and I see this being the beginning of something great for our students and community.
Thank you so much for allowing me to share my story and for your consideration to help start McClure Elementary's very first sports club.
Sincerely,
Branden Carr, Mike McShane, Mike Carter
