McIndoe Falls Academy Community Investment Fund

In the village of McIndoe Falls, Vermont, a small collection of older homes dating from the mid to late 19th century and lying along the Connecticut River, is a jewel of an old building. In 1853, a small group of influential and successful businessmen funded the construction of this building, which was designed in the Greek Revival style, and as such, was an unusual building in this area. The McIndoe Falls Academy is sited on a beautiful two acre lot, surrounded with old sugar maple trees and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
McIndoes Academy served the needs of the local area for 116 years, closing its doors in 1969. Since that closing, the Trustees managing the affairs of the Academy have done an excellent job of maintaining the building. As most of the Trustees are now in their late 60s and older, there is concern for the future of the building. Currently the McIndoe Falls Academy building is being offered as a gift to the Town of Barnet along with $100,000 to assist in the renovating needs. The Academy would house the new Town Office, The Barnet Historical Society, and a Community Center.
We have a fleeting opportunity to preserve a significant piece of Barnet’s history and landscape while developing a foundation for current and future needs. Upgrades to comply with codes and accessibility, interior conversions of existing spaces, and modifications to prepare the building for another 170 years of service to the region will be expensive.
On Tuesday, March 3, 2020 the voters of Barnet will cast a ballot to determine which of several potential town office projects they will support. Other options may be less costly, but also of less historic and community value. Your financial support in advance of and after the vote will help mitigate the tax impact of casting a vote in favor of historic preservation and community development. If the voters choose to support a different project, your donation will be used to preserve and develop the Academy as a non-profit community center.
The McIndoe Falls Academy is a 501(C)3 and your donation is tax exempt.
