McKenzie Family support after deadly home fire

We ask for your support today as we aim to provide relief and recovery for our Legacy Detroit Neighbor, Dana McKenzie and her grandchildren and second-born daughter, India. They have experienced unimaginable tragedy in the first two months of 2023.

The McKenzie Family’s first tragedy occurred on 1/17/23 with the death of her eldest daughter Jasmine, who was 29 years old and the mother of two.

On 2/17/23, around 9:30 pm, this beloved family faced a double tragedy. According to the grandkids, the TV was the cause of the fire. Within half an hour, the entire home of 992 King St. was consumed with the fire department present. They just paid their taxes on the house only a few weeks ago!

The fire caused the death of their youngest daughter Chyna, who was a 21-year-old mother of one. The fire destroyed their home and all of their worldly possessions.

To lose their family home and everything they've invested in it is hard enough, but to lose two adult daughters, with children of their own, and now face raising her grandchildren with no home, creates circumstances that are unimaginable to bear.

Dana, her children, and her grandchildren called 992 King St. home their entire lives. We are helping the family raise money and resources to secure housing for the next year while coordinating permanent housing on King St., in the North End, where Dana wishes to remain with her grandchildren.
