McKenzie's volunteer trip to Ghana
Hi everybody!
My name is McKenzie Solo and I am currently a junior in high school at the Francis W Parker Charter school in Devens Massachusetts. I am raising money to go on a two week volunteer abroad service trip through Cross Cultural Solutions high school travel abroad program. The goal of Cross Cultural Solutions (CCS) is to create change in the world through small personal acts of kindess and selflessness. CCS has in country home bases in Thailand, Costa Rica, India, Guatamala, Tanzania, Peru, Morocco, Brazil and Ghana. I have already submitted an application to their high school travel abroad program, completed an interview, and been accepted into their program as well as completed my enrollment. On June 20th 2015 I will begin my journey to Hohoe Ghana where i will stay, experience the culture, and work for two weeks. For as long as i can remember it has been my dream to travel to Africa and i am so beyond grateful that such an amazing opportunity has come up. I truly believe that this experience will open my eyes to the very different lifestyle that the people of Ghana live and it will open new doors for me to make a change in the world. I have been raised always having what i needed and giving back to the people in the world who are less fortunate than me is something that is extremely important to me. The work I will be doing while in Ghana will range from working in daycares, playing and caring for children, to teaching english at primary schools to young children, to working in women's shelters with kids who usually do not get to play. Many children in Ghana work from a very young age in order to help their family survive, many of them don't know what it's like to play, expecually with older kids. It is also very important for these children to learn English because secondary school education in Ghana is exclusively taught in English. In order to prepare to teach the kids English i will complete a series of training sessions through CCS as well as on my own i will be learning the basics of their langauge, Ewe. There are many challeneges set ahead of me in going on this trip but i am ready and extremely excited to jump right in!
