me making a copper heatsink for the MacBook Air m series

Hello!

My name is Simon, I am from Sweden, a 17 year old student studying law.
But have since I was 5 been very interested in computers and electronics in general. Everything from building to board repairing

Why am I doing this? Well it started when I was gifted the m1 MacBook Air. I was very lucky to get it.
When I tried using it for heavier tasks as video editing and even light gaming, I noticed the computer got very hot and slow until it crashed and shut down.
I looked up this issue and randomly stumbled on a video from Linus Tech Tips modding the mac with thermal pads.
Which got me thinking, if there is headroom for up to 5+mm of thermal pads then wouldn't it be possible to fill out that with metal? Like copper instead of aluminum!
This mod would be very useful for the users that really prefers the small compact size of the Air, but want the better performance which you can only find in models such as the Pro.
With the higher conducting copper and the more mass, the performance would increase by a lot!

My end goal is to make a heatsink for every m series MacBook Air model.

The funds will be used to:
  • Study the heatsinks, experimenting with different metals and thermal compounds.
  • The tools needed and equipment for video documenting
  • Experimenting with heat insulation for the battery etc
  • 3d printing models
  • And of course, the making of the heatsinks

When the project starts, I will make everything public and documented on my Github and YouTube. I want everyone to be able to have access to my project and also be able to make your own designs and improvements.

I would also want to make this as a kit, and make them available for anyone wanting to do this at home!

Funding this would mean the world to me personally, it would enable me to learn and explore. Opening doors that I could never dream of opening.
By helping me fund this, you are also funding a 17 years old guy getting a invaluable education.
Anything helps and is appreciated from the last cent.

Let's do what Apple won't, and with your help. I have no doubt that we can do this. Together as a community

Thank you!
