Meals for Brooklyn ER heroes
Donation protected
German School Brooklyn is an amazing community.
With this fundraising effort, we all have the opportunity to support one of our community members, Dr. Sigrid along with her ER colleagues at two Brooklyn hospitals who are currently working at the frontline to stop the spread of this global pandemic.
Dr. Sigrid is a mother of two GSB students and an ER doctor at both King County and SUNY Downstate hospitals. Sigrid and her colleagues are true heroes of our time, fighting COVID 19 selflessly for all of us while putting their own lives and the lives of their families at risk – in an ER, there is no social distancing, just years of preparation and limited supplies.
In order to show our gratitude to and support these essential frontline workers, we have organized one freshly cooked hot meal per day for the ER staff at both hospitals for the next 4 weeks. In addition to a sign of gratitude, these provided meals will also help extend their limited stockpile of protective gear as leaving the hospital to get food means that another set of protective gear (gown, mask, gloves) is needed.
These meals will be provided by another member of our community, Randi Lockemann, mother to one GSB student and owner of two Brooklyn-based German beer-gardens (DSK and Hasenstüble). As other small businesses have experienced, Randi had to let go of almost her entire staff in mid March and is now running small takeout businesses with those members of her staff ineligible for unemployment benefits. She will use this effort to be able to provide these workers with a better income in these trying times. Randi and her former and hopefully future employees will be cooking some of their favorite national dishes so they will not only be providing German meals but also dishes from Austria, the Ukraine, Mexico - a true Brooklyn potpourri.
So PLEASE CONTRIBUTE to this important fundraiser and give whatever you can, no amount is too small. We all need this to be successful, we need our frontline medical professionals cared for and we need small businesses to rebound or hold-on. This is what this is about.
Please share with family, friends and the larger community. Every dollar counts. It’s an ambitious goal but we can do this!!
(Note: some of you might have seen and contributed to Judy Engleman’s gofundme link, those proceeds will be going toward the same efforts described here. And several parents have individually contributed to supplying meals to both of these hospitals. Thanks to all of you for this from Sigrid and her colleagues!).

Our Goals
Meals-for-Brooklyn-ER-heroes was created with two goals in mind: 1) Mainly to support Dr. Sigrid Wolfram, a German School Brooklyn Community member and her ER staff at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital (who have been on the front line of the Covid-19 crisis) by providing meals and 2) to support the second German School Brooklyn community member, Randi Lockemann, Brooklyn business owner by purchasing meals from her beergarden (DSK) to be delivered to hospital workers for 4 weeks.
Where will your donations go?
The Brooklyn beergarden DSK will be delivering 60 hot meals daily (at 12:30pm) for the ER staff at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital for 28 days. The meals will be individually packaged for safety and ease. $ 16,000 will cover the cost for these meals ($ 9.52 per meal). $ 16.000 of the raised funds will go to DSK for these efforts. Any amount raised above $ 16.000 will be spent for further support of SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital. How these will be specifically spent (e.g., more meals, protective gear) will be decided in agreement with ER doctor Dr. Sigrid Wolfram in 4 weeks time in order to then decide what support would be most beneficial for the two hospitals.
How donations will be transferred
All funds raised will be transferred to Dr. Tanya Faude-Koivisto’s personal checking account. Up to $ 16.000 of the raised funds will be used to pay DSK’s meal delivery efforts using Zelle. Any funds raised above $ 16.000, will go either directly to SUNY Downstate Medical Center and/or Kings County Hospital or will be paid via Tanya Faude-Koivisto’s credit card in order to pay for services or items that will be provided to these two hospitals.
