Meals on Wheels Fund

The Silver Valley Meals on Wheels program, a non-profit organization located in Osburn, is a valued resource to the senior citizens of Shoshone County – spending over 20 years serving home cooked meals to 50-100 homebound senior citizens throughout the Silver Valley per day. We are committed to helping seniors in Shoshone County to improve their health and quality of life so that no one is left hungry. Every knock on the door delivers the food, compassion and care, our affectionate and friendly driver brings so that no again seniors felt isolated. The drivers are also task to do a safety and welfare check to them, as well. Home delivery recipients mostly live alone and the driver delivering the meal is often the only person they see that day.

Each senior participant is given the opportunity to make a contribution toward the cost of the meal. SVS use the contributions to increase the number of meals served, facilitate access to such meals, or provide supportive services related to the nutrition program. Rest assured, no senior is denied a meal due to inability to pay.

Raw food used used in the preparation of meal are obtained from sources that comply with USDA Grade A or better as required by the Area Agency on Aging (AAA). AAA is the governing agency that oversees the Meals on Wheels program and that daily meals served are approved by the licensed dietician employed by them. Likewise, AAA reimburses the center based on the number of delivery/ unit for the month at a unit rate of $4.50 as agreed on in the 4-year contract from July 1, 2018 thought June 2022.

During the on-set of the virus, we lost several senior participant, but we have gained several new participants for the program. However, now, we are facing financial challenge since food and gas prices went up. We are not getting enough contribution back from the seniors because they also prioritize their medicine. Reimbursement we are getting from agencies like AAA is not feasible, but we must continue our commitment.
