On August 31 2023, both our parents traveled to their hometown of ziquitaro, Michoacán, Mexico.
3 weeks into their stay my dad began to feel ill. He started feeling an intense weakness in his arms.
They went to a local clinic in Penjamillo Michoacán on Sept 25 and he was given treatment for dehydration and suspected COVID 19.
Later on that night however his symptoms began to increase and he started to deteriorate physically. He could no longer walk or move his arms.
He was rushed to a hospital in La Piedad Michoacán then transferred to another one in that same city a few days later. There he was given countless tests, labs, spinal taps and x rays.
He was starting to lose his ability to swallow and it was decided to intubate him to allow him to breathe better.
On Oct 2 he was diagnosed formally with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a very rare syndrome where after the body fights a bacterial infection, the immune system begins to attack the body’s nerves.
On Oct 4 he was transferred to Hospital General Dr Miguel Silva in Morelia Michoacán. There he began his immunoglobulin treatment. And we all began our long 46 day journey in Morelia. My siblings left everything behind to be with our dad. A few weeks in, I even brought my baby daughter to stay with us too as we were unsure of how longer I would have to be away from her for. During our stay here none of my siblings and I have been able to work and we took out all the money from our savings and loans to pay for his medicine, medical equipment, medical pillows, etc.
He fought with everything he had in him until he no longer could. On Nov 19, he suffered a cardiac arrests until they could no longer bring him back and he passed away.
As a family we made the decision to bury him in Ziquitaro Michoacán. He was laid to rest in the same cemetery as his parents on Nov 22nd.
