Medical and Legal Support for Latrell Allen

On August 9, 2020, 20 year old Latrell Allen was wrongfully shot by officers of the Chicago Police Department. The police were responding to a call from a woman who had complained her son had been slapped by another boy. The officers pursued Latrell, shooting him a total of five times, four times in the back and once in the face. Multiple witnesses reported that Latrell was unarmed and had his hands raised when the police shot him.
However, the officers’ story conflicts with witness reports. The officers allege that they were responding to a call about a young man with a gun. They stated that Latrell was armed and had fired at them first. A gun was also reported to have been recovered at the scene, however the Chicago Police have been known to plant weapons to cover up the shooting of unarmed individuals. The officers’ version of events has been broadcasted, despite conflicting with witness testimonies, due to the lack of video evidence of the pursuit. This is because Chicago Police were not wearing body cameras.
Latrell is currently being treated for both the gunshots and contracting coronavirus at the University of Chicago hospital. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and a concealed weapon. His bond is now set at one million dollars.
What has happened to Latrell and many other black Americans is despicable, inhumane and unjust. This incident exemplifies one of the many gaps within Chicago Police Department policy, those being the DOJ recommendation to eliminate on foot pursuits and the requirement of officers to wear body cameras. This is not just an issue between black and white people, nor is this just a police issue. This is a moral issue, and as human beings we have an obligation to stand in the name of justice and combat the forces of hate that plague our society.
These funds will be used to help Latrell’s family cover medical expenses and hire a lawyer to prove their son’s innocence. Anything you can donate to them would be greatly appreciated.
