Medical Bills and ongoing support

On Saturday 26 June 2021 our mum, Carla Van Niekerk had another relapse of CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy). She was admitted to ICU and was treated with an expensive but effective intravenous medication. She spent six days in hospital and was then discharged to recover at home.

On Friday, 30 July 2021 our dad, Mike Van Niekerk had a stroke/seizure, and was admitted to the local hospital. He was transferred to the capital in Namibia where he spent a week in ICU and was fitted with a heart monitor to determine the best course of treatment for his condition. Unbeknownst to anyone, it is likely that during his stay in hospital, he contracted COVID.

He was discharged, but two days later on Monday 6th of August was not feeling well and his health quickly deteriorated to the point where he needed to be re-admitted to hospital. He then tested positive for COVID. Mum was also re-admitted to hospital at the same time with another set-back in her CIDP. After a week, Dad was sent to Windhoek (capital of Namibia) where he received treatment for COVID in ICU. Mum followed shortly after, also testing positive and struggling with COVID, on top of her CIDP.

After a hard fight, dad sadly passed away on 31 August 2021.

Mum is currently still in hospital. COVID has affected her in many negative ways and the CIDP has left her unable to walk and her journey to recovery is long. Every day we see small improvements and we are grateful that she is still with us. She is the bravest and strongest woman we know!

As there has been such extensive treatment over the past two months we have just learned that their medical aid has been exhausted. And so we ask if you feel so inclined, that you would please donate to this fund. All the money raised would be used to cover current and future medical costs.
