Help for a Street Medic shot by APD

My dear friend, Meredith Michael, volunteered as an Austin Street Medic who worked tirelessly all last weekend not only organizing medics but tending to the dozens upon dozens of wounded those fateful two days, up until late Sunday night when she was seriously injured by APD.  Meredith was shot in the hands while attempting to help a young black man, Justin Howell, who had been shot with bean bag rounds in the back of the head. He is tragically still in ICU, having sustained serious brain damage Meredith was rendering aid to Justin when APD ordered medics to carry him to their headquarters.  She was leading those medics carrying an unconscious Justin, clearing a path through police and protestors, with her hands crossed above her head (an agreed-upon signal between APD and the medics), when they took aim and shot her in those very hands signaling “FIRST AID!” Here is video footage of the horrifying incident. See the KXAN interview with her.  We’ve waited several days to ask for help, as we wanted to make sure the victims of color were getting their expenses covered through donations. Gratefully, our community has given to them in spades.   She is a loving wife and mother of three children, one of which has a terminal disease, another being a special needs son who is very particular about his food, needs help with basic hygiene, and simply needs to be held a great deal. Her husband recently lost his job, like so many others right now, leaving them without health insurance. She does not have the use of her hands to cook or perform any household or work duties, to shop, drive - properly comfort her son...all the things! Her ring finger, on her left hand, needs surgery, and may not heal completely even after that.  We humbly ask those who can help to donate towards the costs of her copays, medications, the ambulance ride, hospital bills, cost of pre-prepared meals (since she can’t cook), specialists/surgeons she’ll need to see, and so many more costs that come along with a traumatic physical injury.
