Almost exactly a year ago I started to develop some debilitating symptoms that I had never experienced before.
Headaches,Nausea, Dizziness.
But in true Nia fashion I just ignored it because life had to go on and I was only starting to recover financially from not working during covid.
Weeks pass and I am starting to fall asleep at random times all of my symptoms worsen. Again I somewhat ignore it because in tandem with these symptoms I also have been menstruating for 6 weeks….. I know torture. I see my GYN I get test done and we find I am severely anemic. I get two infusions and I should be better in a week after my last session….. I get worse
Headaches become so severe that I start loosing my memory. Dizziness becomes so elevated that I find I can’t stand for very long. My 20/20 vision starts to fade. It’s time to go to the emergency room.
After hours of testing thank the lord we have a diagnosis.
Diagnosis: IDIOPATHIC INTERCRANIAL HYPERTENSION.
Laymans term: Overproduction of spinal fluid paired with the absence’s of vital veins. Causing spinal fluid to leak into skull cavity, causing the brain to swell, which presses on the optic nerve, causing blindness, dizziness, and disorientation.
Symptoms: severe headaches, dizziness, vertigo, loss of short term memory, fatigue, nausea, vision loss
Treatment: Lumbar Punctures aka spinal tap aka TORTURE!!!
I was told by the ER staff that after the spinal tap was completed I should feel a lot better but of course, in Nia fashion, it wasn’t that easy I had to receive not one, not two, but THEEE lumbar punctures due to complications.
I was admitted and spent a week in the hospital. Lost my ability to walk, See basically independence all together.
After being discharged, it took about a month for me to return to my “new normal.” Heavily medicated, chronic headaches, unable to do any strenuous activities above walking short distances with the help of a cane. Unfortunately this included singing….
I had to make a hard decision to call my agents and say I no longer can accept any auditions.
Anything that creates pressure in my body can activate an episode.
Three major episodes later. We might have a way to make me more comfortable.
Monday July 10th, only 8 days shy of my 1 year anniversary of my diagnosis. I will be undergoing surgery that can change my life forever.
Surgery, hospital visits and numerous doctors appointments has left a big hole in my pocket. God is good always but I could use a little help. Anything will help!!!
god bless you!
