*Volunteer Medic at Standing Rock*
Donation protected
My name is Esther Dane and I will be volunteering from Nov 24th-Dec 8th in the Medic tent to support the Water Protectors in Standing Rock, North Dakota. (What is Standing Rock?) The Dakota Access fracked oil Pipeline (What is the Dakota Access Pipeline?) was re-routed because it posed significant threats to the drinking water of the citizens of Bismarck, ND. The new route for the pipeline runs though Lakota Treaty land and the Standing Rock Reservation, threatening Native survival.
The Missouri River and Lake Oahe, life-giving water sources for the Lakota Sioux and the millions of people living downstream, must be protected from destruction by the pipeline, the construction of which is in direct violation of the Water Protection Act, the Historical Preservation Action and US environmental justice policies. Sacred burial sites have been desecrated, treaties broken, illegal use of force employed by local, state & national law enforcement .
There are over 5,000 people camping at Standing Rock, all of whom need emergency & routine medical care for traumatic injury, management of chronic illness, mental health, and everything in between. The time to act is now!
I'm leaving the Bay on Nov 22nd to drive to Standing Rock for Thanksgiving with a group of dedicated folks doing amazing work with organizing youth, creating films, and hosting music events in SF. We are bringing winter clothes, gear, and medical supplies to the Healers & members of the Lakota Sioux Standing Rock Reservation as an act of solidarity to answer the call to action.
Donations will be used to purchase:
*Approx. $650 for gas, food, water (filtered & all-purpose), firewood, portable wood stove, tire chains, anti-freeze, other winter camping supplies I will need to be self-sufficient while I am there.
All donations in excess of these needs will go to directly to the Medic + Healer Council:
*Medical Supplies: solar showers, solar chargers (for glucometers, phones, long-range walkie-talkies, other battery-operated equipment), First Aid supplies, non-latex/nitrile gloves, triple antibiotic ointment, castile soap, gauze, bandages, steri strips, saline nasal drops & eye wash, earplugs, etc.
*Art Supplies to create banners, representing the Bay Area's solidarity with Standing Rock.
I have consistently acted within the framework of health and art in my work, towards a collective vision of justice, organic leadership, fierce organizing, and sustainable solutions for the future. We must continue to collaborate & organize with more urgency than ever in the face of tryanny. Please join me!
