Who am I?

I'm Franka (25), I'm from Munich and am finishing my master's degree in psychology this year.

After almost two years spent on Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, it is clearer to me than ever that the opportunities for education are absolutely not equally distributed around the world.

Problem

University costs on Zanzibar are much higher than for example in Germany and most families have financially very difficult conditions. Especially in the low season (twice a year), when there are hardly any tourists on the island, families struggle every day to get food.

For some time I have known two young women (twin sisters: Rahma, 19 and Ummul-Kurthum, 19) whose dream is to study medicine. I have spent a lot of time with the family and have always been welcomed with great hospitality. They live in Stonetown (Zanzibar City) and, like many other families, are financially dependent on tourism. The family is far from being able to cover the study costs for the two sisters.

Solution

I collect donations to enable Rahma and Ummul-Kurthum to obtain the university degree in medicine they have longed for and thus the chance of a good job. This will later benefit the family again and interrupt their dependence on tourism. The collected donations will be paid directly to the university (Zanzibar School of Health & Glorious Academy), for which a payment receipt is provided. The tuition for a degree in medicine is $3.000 (€2.800) from the beginning of the program until graduation after 3 years. So the total university cost for Rahma and Ummul-Kurthum is $6.000 (€5.600).

Wer bin ich?

Ich bin Franka (25), komme aus München und schließe dieses Jahr mein Masterstudium in Psychologie ab.

Nach fast zwei Jahren, die ich auf Zanzibar und dem tansanischen Festland verbracht habe, ist mir klarer als je zuvor, dass die Chancen auf Bildung weltweit absolut nicht gleich verteilt sind.

Problem

Universitätskosten auf Zanzibar sind deutlich höher als bei uns in Deutschland und die meisten Familien haben finanziell sehr schwierige Voraussetzungen. Vor allem in der Nebensaison (zwei Mal jährlich), in der kaum Touristen auf der Insel zu finden sind, kämpfen Familien jeden Tag, Essen auf den Tisch zu bekommen.

Seit einiger Zeit kenne ich zwei junge Frauen (Zwillingsschwestern: Rahma, 19 und Ummul-Kurthum, 19), deren Traum es ist, Medizin zu studieren. Ich habe viel Zeit mit der Familie verbracht und wurde stets mit großer Gastfreundschaft empfangen. Sie leben in Stonetown (Sansibar Stadt) und sind, wie viele andere Familien auch, finanziell abhängig vom Tourismus. Die Familie kann die Studienkosten für die zwei Schwestern bei weitem nicht tragen.

Lösung

Ich sammle Spenden, um Rahma und Ummul-Kurthum den ersehnten Universitätsabschluss in Medizin und damit die Chance auf einen guten Beruf zu ermöglichen. Das kommt später der Familie wieder zu Gute und reduziert die Abhängigkeit vom Tourismus. Die gesammelten Spenden werden direkt an die Universität (Zanzibar School of Health & Glorious Academy) gezahlt, wofür ein Zahlungsbeleg bereit gestellt wird. Die Studiengebühren für einen Abschluss in Medizin betragen 3.000$ (2.800€) von Beginn des Studiums bis zum Abschluss nach 3 Jahren. Insgesamt betragen die Universitätskosten für Rahma und Ummul-Kurthum also 6.000$ (5.600€).
