So who is SABEH? And why a target of $7,689 AUD?

SABEH is a registered Timorese non-government healthcare organisation. It provides free healthcare to Timor Leste’s population who are unable to access government-provided health services. SABEH is short for Saude Ba Ema Hotu, which, translated from Tetun (the East Timorese language), means Health for all.

The fundraising target is $7,689 because that is the cost to renovate and furnish a new clinic and storage facility ($2,307), and to obtain a medication licence ($5,382) in Timor Leste. I have partnered with SABEH to support and assist in growing their capacity. SABEH operations currently rely entirely on donations and volunteers. Subsequently, SABEH does not have a consistent or adequate supply of medication to treat all patients. The medication supply chain in Timor Leste is still developing and unreliable. In 2024, Timor Leste paracetamol (acetaminophen) supplies were practically exhausted. A strip of ten tablets, barely more than 24 hours worth of treatment, cost $10 US dollars, and that’s if you were able to find some for sale. The average daily wage in Timor Leste is $12.60 USD. Palliative patients, as well as anyone in pain, could not access this most basic pain killer. Some Australian Veterans and I donated tens of thousands of paracetamol tablets and facilitated delivery of them to SABEH. A medication licence for SABEH will give them greater control over medication supplies.

I was fortunate to assist with one of SABEH’s outreach clinics in 2023 and it was the purest form of healthcare I’ve ever experienced. Health professionals with the most basic equipment and supplies delivering essential interventions and support to fellow countrymen and women in their remote villages and homes. I wanted to support SABEH so I’m now utilising my Pharmacist and Health Logistician skills to do just that.
