Meet Dada: Supporting a single mother, sister and friend

salam! my name is Noor and I am a Canadian who has been living and working in Tanzania, specifically in the beautiful island of Zanzibar, for the past three years. Currently, I am in Zanzibar working on various local projects with organizations that aim to uplift communities in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, particularly in a place called Singida.

During my time here, I have had the profound privilege of meeting a remarkable woman, a 29-year-old single mother who has recently relocated to Zanzibar with her adorable young daughter. Although we come from different backgrounds and speak different languages, we have connected deeply through our conversations, often using Google Translate to bridge the gap between English and Swahili. Despite the language barrier, her story transcends words and touches the heart.

This courageous mother became pregnant while living in mainland Tanzania, and in search of a better life for herself and her daughter, she made the brave decision to move to Zanzibar. She is kind, hardworking, and possesses an unwavering spirit, yet she faces significant challenges in her new environment. With limited resources and no stable place to call home, she struggles to find affordable housing in an area where rent can vary greatly.

What breaks my heart is knowing that she is struggling to provide even the most basic necessities for her daughter, who is currently unwell. As a single mother, she works tirelessly as a cleaning woman, earning only about $50 CAD a month, even though she works 6-7 days a week. Her dedication to her job is inspiring, as she carries her daughter on her back while she works, all while maintaining a positive outlook despite the difficulties she faces.

I want to help this beautiful family. My goal is to raise $3,000 CAD, which will provide her with enough support to cover rent and basic living expenses for approximately six months. This financial assistance would alleviate some of the pressure she faces and allow her to focus on caring for her daughter and finding stability in their lives.

As a Muslim woman living alone, her journey is filled with challenges that many of us can hardly imagine. Yet, she never complains and continues to show strength and resilience. I hope to create a meaningful gift for her, a surprise that will let her know she is not alone in this journey.
