Our good friend Meg was in a terrible snowboarding accident a couple of weeks ago where she broke her back at Breckenridge closing weekend. While snowboarding with friends enjoying a late season pow day, Meg encountered severe flat light. She was unable to see clearly and ended up snowboarding off a ledge, landed on her feet and compressed her spine. She endured a burst fracture of the L3, compression fracture of S1 and L4, and the burst fracture went into her spinal cord and blocked spinal fluid and nerves. Meg also lost motor control and sensation in her left leg. Without any time to reflect on what had just happened to her, Meg was in surgery the next day. After five hours of meticulous work, a few rods and screws, Dr. Braxton and the Steadman Clinic in Vail Medical Center, were able to make it so Meg would be able to walk again, but it will be a long road.
Meg has a strenuous recovery ahead of her. It will be 1 month before she's even able to start physical therapy. Anyone who knows Meg, knows sitting around doing nothing is not something she's good at. In fact, I'm not sure if she's ever done that before. It's been 4 weeks since the accident, and recovery is very slow, but she is starting to gain sensation back in her left leg and is now able to walk on it!
Alas, no one likes to ask for help, but the unfortunate situation is that Meg's health insurance ended on April 30th, one week after the accident. Meg is faced with numerous medical bills. After 4 nights in the hospital and the long surgery her deductible will be met, which add up to $5,000. In the next few months of follow ups and physical therapy, along with a SECOND surgery in the next 1-2years, Meg will find herself with greater than $12,000. She will also be limited at work and not be able to work the hours she normally puts in as a seasonal employee; of this money it will mostly go towards her normally monthly bills (rent, phone, student loans, etc). Many of you may know Meg from her years of being a snowboard instructor at Beaver Creek. She was able to save up some money to get her through part of the summer, but as she was not anticipating these astronomical medical bills, her current financial situation is dire.
Her friends are doing what they can to help Meg through this hard time, but most of that equates to time and a helping hand. Any financial help would be enormously appreciated. I'm sure the massive bills that seem to be never ending and impossible to pay are weighing very heavy on Meg's huge heart. Meg is always there for whoever needs her and is surely the person to light up a room with positivity. Throughout all of this Meg has shown nothing but her usual positivity and hope, but I know the pain of being stuck in recovery and the financial burdens is harder for her than she lets on.
Thanks for your time and continuous support for Meg <3
