Mel and Bill Got Flooded!

Donation protected
Nightmare scenario!! During the huge Christmas rainstorm last week, Melanie and Bill's basement apartment flooded. They were visiting family in Alberta so it wasn't discovered until Boxing Day when Mel's sibling (that's me) came to check on their cat. Then they drove home for two days through winter conditions (with norovirus!) to start cleaning, drying, and throwing out what can't be saved.

Friends and family have been helping out as much as we can. The cause of the leak was found and fixed, but with the sheer volume of water (over an inch in their kitchen) and how long it sat before they could get home, the damage was extensive. Their unit also needs further work to address mould/structure issues to make sure there are no future health risks. This is putting Mel, Bill, and their beloved tuxedo kitty Nomi in a really rough place for the start of 2025!!

Costs have been adding up, with over $2,000 spent already on dehumidifier rental, storage unit space, storage boxes, replacement furniture, cleaning supplies and other essentials. Having found signs of mould during the clean-up, they will also need to get a hotel room soon until their place is safe to live in again. They are working closely with their landlord to figure out repairs, but they could really use whatever financial support is available to help them out while they deal with this situation. This has been an emotionally, physically, and now financially-exhausting time after a tumultuous year, and these two really need a break and some kindness from the universe.

Please donate and share if you can. Every amount is appreciated! An estimated budget breakdown is below. If you have any questions or other kinds of support to offer, please reach out to me (Ciaran). (Mel and Bill have handed over admin so they can focus on clean-up priorities.)

Thank you so much! Everyone who has helped out, sent kind words, food, hugs, and help of every kind, you are so appreciated and loved in return.

Budget Breakdown:
  • dehumidifier/fan rentals - $1,000
  • furniture replacement - $1,000
  • storage unit rental - $700
  • cleaning supplies - $500
  • storage boxes/rubbermaids - $500
  • hotel/airbnb (estimating $200ish/night for 2 weeks) - $2,800
