A Mother's Final Wish
Donation protected
I married a wonderful woman over 20 years ago, and along with her hand in marriage came a wonderful gift: her mother. Now I know what you're saying to yourself--how many people truly love their mother-in-law? But I really do. Melania Rayo--for whom we named our eldest daughter--is a wonderful person, friend, cook and, most especially, mother.
And that is what makes this day so difficult. You see, it was discovered only recently that she has late-stage esophageal cancer. It is very aggressive, it has spread throughout much of her body, and it is terminal.
She has seven children and at least 23 grandchildren (it's become difficult to count!), and she loves them all. She made it to her 80th birthday, and we were incredibly lucky to be able to hold a big celebration for her recently, which also became an opportunity for the many people locally who love her to say their goodbyes.
While it is impossibly sad to know there is nothing we can do to keep her with us much longer, we have an opportunity to make her final wish come true. She wants to spend her last few days in the place she was born, Mexico. She wants to be able to say goodbye to those in Mexico who love her and were unable to come to the United States to see her, including one of her sons, his wife, and their children.
Because of her condition and the limited time she has left, we need to get medical air transport from Los Angeles to Mexico City. Unfortunately, the cost to do so is well over $25,000. The cost-prohibitive nature of this endeavor is compounded by the fact we have very little time--maybe only days.
Any amount you are able to donate would be greatly appreciated, and every little bit helps. And you will have the heartfelt thanks of seven children and their spouses, 23+ grandchildren, and one amazing mom.
We certainly hope to have enough money in time to make this happen. If we do not, we will use the money toward ensuring she gets to Mexico to be buried there, as is her wish.
Thank you so much for helping us make my mother-in-law's final wish a reality.
With deepest thanks,
Jeffrey Winslow
