MELBOURNE TIMORESE RELIEF FUND
The recent catastrophic flooding and landslides in Timor-Leste, unleashed by Cyclone Seroja, devastated the country, and especially the capital Dili, where the brunt of the destruction was felt. The East Timorese Government recently declared a state of calamity, and appealed for international assistance from Australia and others. The Timorese government has reported more than 40 Timorese dead and many more are still unaccounted for, over 12,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and over 4,500 families have been affected. Despite some emergency assistance already being provided on the ground, much more will need to be done. Cyclone Seroja could not have hit at a worst time, with the country recently registering a spike in COVID-19 positive cases.
In the wake of this natural disaster, a number of community organisations and members of the East Timorese community in Melbourne have banded together to discuss ways in responding to the plight of our brothers and sisters in Timor-Leste through a unified approach.
As such, the Melbourne Timor Relief Fund (MTRF) has emerged as a collaborative body with the aim of establishing a funding avenue that provides a pathway for community organisations and members to aid in relief efforts in Timor-Leste during crisis events, in the hope to provide necessary resources.
MTRF is a not-for-profit body with funds disseminated per the crisis relief requirement through endorsed organisations and networks in Australia. Its main intention is to raise funds for the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts in Timor Leste in time of crisis.
Our immediate focus is to galvanise financial support from members of East Timorese and Australian communities in Victoria through a Go Fund Me appeal and fundraising community events with 100% of the funds to the relief effort in Timor-Leste.
In addition to this GoFundMe page, MTRF will be hosting a fundraising Twilight Community Concert at Akoonah Park, Cardinia Street in Berwick, Victoria on Saturday 24 April from 5.00pm. For tickets please visit: www. trybooking.com/bqkye
MRTF thanks you for your support and it is inspiring to know Timor-Leste can still count on our support that will enable it to emerge an even stronger and more resilient nation.
