On October 21, 2016, after celebrating her twin boys' 17th birthday, Melissa experienced a sudden subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the brain caused by a cerebral aneurysm. She was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital and was immediately transported to a second hospital that specializes in brain injuries. She subsequently underwent brain surgery where a 7mm aneurysm was discovered and platinum coils were inserted to promote clotting. Unfortunately, complications followed her initial surgery.
The medication she was given to prevent a second bleed or stroke caused her brain to swell. As a result, Melissa passed in and out of consciousness, and when she was conscious, she was confused, disoriented, and had no memory of her sons or Tony.
A further complication from lying in a bed for all this time was a buildup of fluid in her lungs making her breathing labored and shallow.
These complications took their toll not only on Melissa, but on Tony, Ethan, and Jared who watched as she struggled to rally. And she continues to rally. While prognosis is good, her recovery will be a very long process. Melissa remains in the neurologic ICU.
Prior to this injury, Melissa worked at a YMCA before- and after-care program, where she provides the kids in her care with a safe, positive, and fun environment, which is so important to working parents. Much like with her own boys, Ethan and Jared, she influences and inspires young minds to be positive contributors to their family and community.
Because Tony and Melissa would never ask for themselves, I am reaching out to family, friends, co-workers, and classmates in hope that you will be able to contribute to Melissa, Tony, Ethan and Jared and the considerable financial challenges they face. While we have no way to determine the true costs associated with the ongoing care, we hope to reach a goal of $10,000.00.
